Help with Digging up the Paleolithic DietThe Paleolithic BasicsThe way of eating is simple, it's called the paleolithic diet or paleodiet, the idea behind it, eat only what can be eaten through the use of your hands and simple tools (rock and stick). Do Eat: Do Not Eat: Why the Paleolithic Diet is My Favorite Diet Plan (Gluten Free and Healthy)Now for the why's, because I would expect that none of you would change your way of eating just cause I say so and I am the first to say that reading one diet book or article and changing your way of life off that book, or article is a bad idea. The author can always be wrong, yah, I'm saying I could be straight out be wrong, and so please do read and read a lot so that you can make your own decision. Before I had even heard of the "Paleolithic Diet", I had already formed a similar diet of my own. In this diet I cut out all grains, all dairy products and all refined sugar. I rigged this diet up through a whole bunch of reading, in an effort to rid myself of my own villains... asthma and allergies... and it worked. But why? Well I'll start with the worst of the bad guys; wheat, oats, barley and rye. All of these grains, other than the fact that because they have to be ground, have absolutely no nutritional value, and the only reason it is even classified as a food is because a few B-vitamins are added to it, is a protein in these grains called gluten. Gluten causes a toxic reaction in a large portion of the population, which hasn't at all been established, but it's somewhere between 1% and 30% of the population (depending on which study you read).. Gluten causes a reaction in which the villi (little hairs along the small intestine which are vital for absorption) are destroyed, and the worst form of leaky gut syndrome follows. So what's so bad about this? Other than the fact that you're greatly decreasing absorption your body is also now letting whole proteins into the body because of the leaky gut. When this happen your liver and immune system have to work overtime to attack and remove all of these foreign proteins. To add to this, the body sees these foreign proteins as a threat to the body and quickly builds antibodies to attack the protein, the problem is that some of these proteins in a partially broken down form have structures that are identical to proteins that make up your body, big problem, when these anti-bodies are built they eventually find there way to other parts of the body and attack these like structures, this is thought to be the cause of many auto-immune disorders such as arthritis and asthma. The asthma part I can support from my own experiences. I lived with an inhaler by my side till the age of 18 when I finally made the decision to get serious about my diet. I cut out all grains and within a few months I didn't even need to use my inhaler when I went to the gym. It really is great not having to always worry if I have my inhaler with me, and I can take off running and when I stop I'm still able to breath, it really is great, breathing is good. My asthma was the major thing that went when I cut out the grains, but it wasn't all. It was amazing to see how quickly my face cleared up, I used to wash my face twice a day and put on every cream in the book, but I still had terrible acne, I don't even pay that much attention to my face anymore and it stays clear. It's not magic, the grains cause the body to go under stress, they cause an inflammatory reaction and attack nearly every organ in the body, so there is little surprise when cutting out all the junk makes such a big difference. Try cutting the grains (wheat, oats, barley, rye) out for a month, yes I'm not saying it will be easy, but just give it a one month trial, really it should be at least three months, but for just one, I'm sure you will see a huge difference in how you act, feel and look, then the only question is if you can keep that diet for the rest of your life, you decide if it's worth it, but honestly, it really is, after really not having grains for a couple months your body just stops craving them, and when you do eat the grains they just taste like paste, it's funny once you get out of the grains cycle to see how much people will do to keep their dough and how much of an addiction there is to this pasty nutrition free junk. Even if you don't have many health problems now cutting out the grains could be the solution to preventing arthritis and a plethora of other diseases, which in studies have been shown as being possibly caused by gluten. So just give it a try, cut out the grains. So there you have it, my case against grains, and I didn't even go into the carbohydrate aspect of grains, did I mention that they feed cows grains to fatten them up? Guess the beef industry has it figured out. On to dairy, to really get to an ideal diet you should, also cut out dairy products, which have both proteins and lactose that the body has trouble breaking down, yet, if you are going to drink milk then organic grass grazed milk is the best type, since it's free of all the antibiotics, hormones, blood and puss, that make up the mass produced milk products and is higher in beneficial fatty acids, like CLA. The "Paleolithic Diet", I'd highly recommend that you do you're own research on this one, I've given you my own ideas on why I think this is the ideal diet, but please don't just take my word for it, read up until you really believe in it, or don't, then you'll be able to make your own decision and stick to it. The best book I've read on the subject is Neanderthin by Ray Audett. He really does go in depth into the diet, which consists of meat, fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds. |
